Having looked at 5 different posters for films from genres i concluded that the following conventions frequently appear.

for example:

dominant central image.

Mise-en_scene.

.Smaller images

.Images of stars

.Name of star

Name of director.

.Reviews/star ratings

.Reference to awards

.Reference to sources material

.Reference to associated merchandise

.Production company logos

.Billing/credits

.Sound logos

.Website

.Social media links

.Tag lines

.Release date

.Reference to different formats

.Reference to other films/producers/writers etc
